Are we alone in the universe?

The Earth's moon, coincidentally also named 'The Moon'. Just one of billions of moons and planets throughout the universe.

As regular readers of the Charles Fudgemuffin blog may remember, my short story 'We Come In Peace' features an alien who visits Earth.

It's a light-hearted story and entirely fictional, but when you consider that the observable universe contains an estimated 100 to 200 billion galaxies, each with an average 100 billion stars, you have to suspect that's there's at least a chance that we're not alone in the universe.

I personally find books and documentaries on space and the universe really fascinating, so it's interesting to read what famous people have said about aliens and UFOs...

1) NASA astronaut, Gordon Cooper:

"While working with a camera crew supervising flight testing of advanced aircraft at Edward's Air Force Base, California, the camera crew filmed the landing of a strange disc object that flew in over their heads and landed on a dry lake nearby. A camera crewman approached the saucer, it rose up above the area and flew off at a speed faster than any known aircraft."

2) Will Smith:

"I think it would be arrogant and borderline foolish to believe there's no other life forms that exist out there."

3) Neil Armstrong:

"We have no proof, but if we extrapolate based on the best information we have available to us, we have to come to the conclusion that ... other life probably exists out there and perhaps in many places."

4) Dan Aykroyd:

"I not only believe, I believe that there are many different species of ships, there are many different species of extraterrestrials, and not all of them are up to good."

5) President Harry S. Truman:

"I can assure you that flying saucers, given that they exist, are not constructed by any power on earth."

6) Jeff Goldbloom:

"The universe is so big, there's so many worlds, there must be one of them or more, something that's alive."

7) NASA astronaut, Storey Musgrove:

"Statistically it's a certainty there are hugely advanced civilizations, intelligences, life forms out there. I believe they're so advanced they're even doing interstellar travel. I believe it's possible they even came here."

8) James Beattie, former footballer:

"I'm not a crackpot. I just believe that there is far too much evidence in existence to dismiss it. There is no way that we are alone in the universe. To suggest we are alone is merely burying our heads in the sand. When you look at all the reported sightings, accounts of abduction and that sort of thing then it stands to reason that we are only being told what people want us to know. But as I said before, I don't think people can handle the truth and that is why there is no real proof."

9) Ronald Reagan:

"In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity. I occasionally think how quickly our differences, worldwide, would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world."

10) Nick Clegg

Finally, back in 2012 Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg claimed to have personally seen people from other galaxies when he remarked, “You see people literally in a different galaxy who are paying extraordinarily low rates of tax.”

Or perhaps his comment was just a misuse of the word 'literally'.
